5 Websites You Can't Live Without
by George Kaywood

If you're not a veteran handicapper in cyberspace, trust me: youwill reach a point where you're comfortable surfing to websites you've never visited before and perhaps leapgrogging to other from there. By that time, you will have found a handful of handicapping/horseracing websites that you simply can't live without. And the chances are good that the ones listed here will be among them, because they provide basic yet important information for newcomers and old-timers alike.

(1) http://www.drf.com - The Daily Racing Form site. As you would expect, the DRF online contains current racing news and feature articles, past performance availability, and many of the same things you see in virtually all of the printed editions of the Form. The ultimate value at this site, however, is the availability of entries and results. While there are other sites who also offer entries and results at no cost, the DRF site covers more tracks than any other. Players who need to know the entries and results for racetracks like Flagstaff, Grants Pass Downs, and Wyoming Downs will find them at the DRF website.

The other outstanding feature of the DRF website is Stable Mail. Let's say you've spotted a couple of horses you want to follow. Stable Mail is a free service that will notify you via email when a particular horse works out or is entered to run. Equibase now has its equivalent, Virtual Stable, but DRF had it first and deserves the spotlight for a great idea.

(2) http://www.tsnhorse.com - Thoroughbred Sports Network. A complementary site to Bloodstock's BRISnet, TSN has two features that make it a must-bookmark site: The Handicapper's Edge, a free daily racing newsletter that offers a tremendous amount of handicapping information that is simply not available anywhere else. Current track bias profiles for different tracks appear once a week, along with rolling current trainer and jockey standings so you can tell who's really hot. Good stuff. Super Tote is a free online tote board, the first one of its kind on the Internet, a useful feature to look at from time to time, invaluable if you are a player who plays via one of the telephone betting accounts available around the country.

(3) http://www.horseracing.about.com - Perhaps the ultimate list of links to a huge number of handicapping and thoroughbred-oriented pages on the Internet, assembled by the tireless Cindy Pierson of about.com. Everything from racing news summaries from various sources to exhaustive lists of links to everything a thoroughbred racing fan could want to research.

(4) http://www.haynet.net - Karen Pautz established and maintains this site which others have dubbed "a list of almost all the horse sites on the 'Net." It has a truly incredible amount of throughbred racing links and many other sections lusting sites for almost anything imaginable relating to horses. New additions are clearly noted with dates.

(5) http://bloodhorse.com - The Bloodhorse Interactive has its roots in breeding and pedigree information, but over the last three years has expanded its coverage to include handicapping, features, editorials, and specializes features such as information on training race horses, something that the average player really knows little about. With information changing frequently, there's a lot to like about this site.

Of course, I'd like to list handicapping.com among the horseracing sites you can't live without, but I figure you already have it as one of yours or you wouldn't be here!
